Favorite Places - Deyrolle

Deyrolle, 46 rue de Bac, Paris 75007.
Ok, so we owe our friend Tyler for taking us here. We have always dreamed about having a house with secret passageways and hidden doors, and something about this shop tends to fit right into that ambiance.

The walls are the most amazing shade of greenish blue, with everything in scientific glass cases. There are rows of butterflies and bugs, with taxidermied animals sprinkled throughout.

This porcupine was amazing, and the handwritten tags listing name and pricing fit in with the old world aesthetic.

The store has been around since 1831, and I'm sure is flourishing with the sudden resurgence of hipness of displaying taxidermy in your home.

It suffered a fire in 2008 and has one room that is a gallery cataloging the destruction. The photos are brilliant and tragic, seeming to belong in a modern art museum. The photo above has the reflection of the new zebra that now lives in the gallery.

We both got butterflies, but Lula would have loved to get this biosphere as well. Next time?

Check out their website: http://www.deyrolle.com/magazine/
Although it doesn't quite do justice to the magic of the place.

hike by the ocean

One of our favorite, most fabulous hikes in Marin has to be the Marin Headlands, starting at Rodeo Beach. To get there you can either go through a one-way tunnel with a super long traffic light or go over the mountain, right next to the golden gate bridge.

Once you're to the beach, the climb up the hill is super steep, but the views the whole way are pretty stellar. This is the perfect time of year to hike because the cold weather tends to keep the fog at bay.
